) This colony of cottages whispers good taste, all sage green linens and British
colonial-style dark wood furniture. All units have kitchenettes and flat panel TVs; even
the smallest have private patios. None are more than a few minutes' walk from the small
private beach. The central lobby has a kind of tropical ski lodge feel, with a fireplace and
charmingly dim pub. The formal dining room is one of the island's best restaurants (dinners
$22 to $35), serving Caribbean-tinged dishes such as grilled lobster tail or guava-glazed
rack of lamb.
New Plymouth Inn HOTEL $$

) There's something slightly spooky about this imposing pink colonial, built in 1830.
Maybe it's the creaky, great-aunt's-house vibe of the nine guest rooms, each with peri-
od touches like quilts and pedestal sinks. Maybe it's the old-fashioned walled garden, like
something out of a 19th-century romance novel. Or maybe it's the ghost of the home's ori-
ginal owner, Captain Billy Roberts, who's said to enjoy rocking on the porch rockers at
night. Don't worry, he's friendly.
