Green Turtle Cay
POP 450
The northernmost of the four Loyalist cays, Green Turtle takes a little more effort to get to,
but only the most determined curmudgeons will leave unhappy.
This island wears its history on its sleeve. New Plymouth, the main town, looks much as
it did in the early 1800s, with narrow lanes of New England-style cottages built by crown-
loyal settlers fleeing the US after the Revolutionary War. Loyalist descendants won't sell
property to non-islanders, and in low season the roosters easily outnumber the people.
Beyond New Plymouth, the island's roads become rutty as they snake into dense forests
of Caribbean pine and casuarina. If you don't get lost (it's easy to do!), you'll find luxe
resorts, magnificent empty beaches, and reefs just crying out for diving and snorkeling. At
night, hop to the sounds of rake 'n' scrape at one of the island's tiny no-name bars, or down
one of Green Turtle's most famous inventions, the Goombay Smash.
SIGHTS
New Plymouth
New Plymouth is lined with interesting buildings of historical significance. Check out the
Loyalist Cemetery (Parliament St) , which has graves dating back two centuries. And
don't miss the Old Gaol , a crumbling stone structure thought to be 150 to 200 years old.
