Getting There & Around
The Andros Town Airport serves Central Andros. The Bahamas Fast Ferry travels between
Nassau and Fresh Creek two or three times weekly. For specific information on flights,
boats and ferries, see Click here .
The Lighthouse Yacht Club & Marina (
242-368-2305; www.androslighthouse.com ;
Fresh Creek) has 18 slips for vessels.
You can rent cars from around $80 per day. Ask a local for a hookup. For a taxi, call Cent-
ral Andros Taxi (
242-368-2333) .
GET CRABBY
During late spring and early summer, football-sized land crabs cross the road en
masse for a paroxysm of mating and egg laying - though many will wind up in
Androsian cooking pots instead. Crab hunting is an island-wide sport, done at
night with flashlights, net bags and quick reflexes (those suckers can pinch!).
The captured crustaceans are usually kept in cages for weeks or months, fed a
diet of coconut and mango to fatten them and sweeten their meat. In June taste
the results at the All Andros Crab Fest in Fresh Creek, a rollicking party and
island-wide feast featuring crab soup, baked crab, crab rice, crab patties and
'crab cultural events.'
CARGILL CREEK AREA
South of Fresh Creek, the Queen's Hwy becomes a lonely, pitted track traveling through
marshlands and mudflats. This is Andros' prime bonefishing territory; what precious little
tourism infrastructure there is exists to cater to anglers on frills-free fishing trips. The two
main hamlets are Cargill Creek , which opens westward into the expansive flats of both
the North and Middle Bights. Two miles further south, Behring Point is the literal end of
the road. Across the water is Mangrove Cay, but there's no transportation to get there.
Sleeping & Eating
The lodgings are designed for anglers seeking bonefishing packages, not romantic beachy
getaways. If you happen to be in the area and just want a room for a night, they can likely
accommodate you. Dining options are slim pickin's - if you're just down here for a day-
trip, you might want to pack a picnic.
