the island was named by Greek spongers for the Mediterranean island of Andros. A few
locals still make a living sponging (see the boxed text, Click here ), but most earn a liv-
ing from fishing. The famous Androsian sloops, however, have been replaced by fiberglass
outboards.

Many visitors arrive in Andros by plane. Andros is served by four airports (be sure to fly
to the correct airport for wherever you intend to stay!):
Andros Town Airport (ASD;
242-368-2030) Serves Central Andros; 3 miles south of
Fresh Creek.
Congo Town Airport (TZN;
242-369-2640) Serves South Andros.
Mangrove Cay Airport (MAY;
242-369-0083) On Mangrove Cay.
San Andros Airport (SAQ;
242-329-4224) Serves North Andros; 10 miles south of
Nicholl's Town.
The following airlines fly between Andros and other Bahamian islands:
LeAir ( 242-377-2356; www.leaircharters.com ) Has two daily flights from Nassau to
Andros Town, and charter service to all the airports.
Regional Air ( 242-329-7108; www.goregionalair.com ) Flies twice weekly between
Freeport and San Andros.
Western Air ( 242-329-4000; www.westernairbahamas.com ) Flies twice daily between
Nassau and San Andros, and Nassau and Congo Town. Sometimes, the airline combines
the flight, meaning you can hop on during the stopover in San Andros and travel on to
Congo Town, or vice-versa.
