and Holmes Rock ($4), but don't count on getting a ride back. Better to rent a car or join a

WEST END
A rum-runners' haven during the Prohibition years, Grand Bahama's westernmost settle-
ment once played host to marquee names like Al Capone. These days, West End is a sleepy
collection of tumbledown shacks, half-sunken boats and piles of sun-bleached conch shells.
Sleeping & Eating
Old Bahama Bay Resort & Marina RESORT $$$
( 242-346-6500; www.oldbahamabay.com ; Bayshore Rd; r from $249; W) On the
island's isolated westernmost tip, this unfinished 150-acre luxury resort feels a little lonely.
But the completed parts of the resort have some of the island's swankest facilities. Pink
stucco cottages, all outfitted in airy whites and colonial dark woods, dot manicured grounds
of hibiscus and coconut palms. The marina has its own customs and immigration facility,
making it popular with well-heeled yachties in from Florida, just 55 miles west. Facilities
include walking and snorkeling trails, a vast heated swimming pool with massage jets, a
gym, spa, restaurant, bar and helipad.
West End Bakery BAKERY $
( West End; items $4-6; 7am-6pm daily) Drop in to this spic-n-span bakery for a
massive slab of guava duff (boiled pastry filled with sweet guava paste) or a turmeric-
spiked meat patty.
Getting There & Away
A jitney bus (one way $4) runs several times daily from Freeport's International Bazaar
and Port Lucaya Marketplace. Return times can be iffy - visitors are better off renting a car
or joining a tour group.
