The Beaches
The beachside hotels and resorts all have bars, most of them beachside, that will happily
indulge you with fruity rum cocktails or an icy, golden beer. Most of these bars also serve
snacks.
Smith's Point Fish Fry BAHAMIAN, SEAFOOD $
( Taino Beach; mains $7-15; from 6pm Wed & Sat) Wednesday night at the Fish Fry
is like a giant neighborhood party. Several beachfront shacks fire up oil drum cookers and
fry turbot, lobster and conch fritters for crowds of locals, who gossip the night away eating
and drinking cold Kaliks and rum punch. Everyone comes - schoolteachers, hotel clerks,
wealthy expats - and everyone seems to know each other. The scene heats up after 9pm
when the live music gets rolling. Saturday nights are lower-key and attract more tourists,
but are still good fun.
Tony Macaroni's Conch Experience BAHAMIAN, SEAFOOD $$
( 242-533-6766; www.tonybahamas.com ; Taino Beach; mains $10-22; lunch & din-
ner Wed-Sun) Tony Macaroni, the self-proclaimed 'most unique man in the Bahamas' and
the proprietor of this famed Taino Beach conch shack, is as well-known for his joke-a-
minute personality and flirtatious reputation as he is for his delectable conch salad and roast
conch - the island's best, by many accounts. Fortify yourself with a gully wash (a high-
octane mix of coconut water and rum) and watch the sun set over the sand as Tony yuks it
up behind the bar.
Banana Bay BAHAMIAN $
( 242-373-2960; Fortune Beach; mains $8-14; breakfast & lunch) 'World- famous'
banana bread and colorful cocktails are the big draws at this isolated rainbow-colored beach
shack. Have a leisurely lunch (soups, sandwiches) on the waterfront patio then wander the
white sands of Fortune Beach, returning later to slurp down a 'Wacky Frozen Banana.'
ENTERTAINMENT
The resorts offer in-house entertainment and shows as well as live music and plenty of op-
portunities to trip the light fantastic. Hotels also host frequent beach parties, which include
bonfires and barbecues (remember your mosquito repellent). The Port Lucaya Marketplace
is always good for drinks and fun, especially on Thursday through Sunday when live music
throbs in Count Basie Sq.
