In-Depth Information
Arts & Crafts
Galleries abound, as do souvenir shops selling cheap original or hand-copied oil and acrylic
Haitian paintings from as little as $15. For made-in-China trinkets, the Straw Market ( Click
here ) on Bay St is hard to miss (even if you want to). Vendors expect you to bargain the
price down by about 10%.
Doongalik Studios ART GALLERY
( www.doongalik.com ; 18 Village Rd) The best gallery for modern Bahamian art, including
painting, sculpture, mixed media installations, Junkanoo masks and more. One location
southeast of downtown Nassau, and another in Paradise Island's Marina Village.
Balmain Art Gallery SOUVENIRS
( 2nd fl, Mason's Bldg, Bay & Charlotte Sts) Good-quality Bahamian gift items like guava
jam, tea, shell earrings and art prints.
Kennedy Gallery ART GALLERY
( http://mymurphys.com/kennedy/ ; Parliament St) Paintings, sculptures, ceramics, wind
chimes and other works from both established and emerging artists, includes children's art.
Cigars
Premium Cuban cigars can be bought for a song in Nassau, but remember, Uncle Sam pro-
hibits US citizens from importing them. The good news is that Graycliff's cigars are not
made with Cuban tobacco so are permitted into the US by customs.
Graycliff Cigar Co CIGARS
( www.graycliff.com ; 8-12 W Hill St) A team of Cuban torcedores (cigar rollers) hunker
down at antique desks to hand-roll these gorgeous stogies; see also Click here .
Havana Humidor CIGARS
( www.havanahumidor.net ; Crystal Court, Atlantis, Paradise Island) A sizeable collection
of Cuban cigars; includes rolling demonstrations. Americans: you better smoke these here!
Clothing & Fabric
You'll find T-shirts and resort wear at all the resort boutiques and in dozens of stores down-
town. Look out for clothes and home goods of Androsia batik, handmade on the Bahamian
island of Andros. International designers like Gucci and Versace are well represented on
Bay St and at Atlantis.
