DRINKING
Most bars in Nassau bill themselves either as English-style pubs or US-style sports bars (or
'satellite lounges,' so named for their satellite TVs). Many resort hotels have at least one
such bar, as well as more sophisticated lounge bars where music plays in the background
to the low-key chatter of groups of groomed cocktail drinkers.
You will not experience the local color by playing the tourist, however. For that, you
need to hang out at satellite lounges. Although middle-class locals tend toward the same
places as out-of-towners, there are plenty of funky watering holes where the activities cen-
ter on downing beers and playing dominoes. Most have a TV and pool table.
Downtown Nassau
Though downtown seems to drop dead after 5pm when the stores close and the cruise ships
depart, there are a few bright spots. Plan on taking a taxi rather than walking.
SeƱor Frog's PUB
( www.senorfrogs.com ; Woodes Rogers Walk; 11am-1pm) Snubbed by locals, this rauc-
ous tourist trap is actually, er, kind of fun if your mood's right. Down-and-dirty Mexican
grub (mains $11 to $18), cheesy pop tunes, bad frog puns and colorful tropical cocktails -
it's tacky, it's wacky and don't tell anyone we sent you.
Bullion Bar BAR
( www.hiltoncaribbean.com ; British Colonial Hilton Nassau, 1 Bay St) This swank new
lounge is very Wall St, all leather and wood and angular gray furniture. Try the signature
Rumbullion cocktail - dark rum, fresh lime, pineapple homemade ginger infusion.
