Montagu Gardens CONTINENTAL $$
( 242-394-6347; E Bay St; mains $13-29; lunch & dinner Mon-Sat) Though the Ro-
man villa decor (faux stone walls, headless statues) is kitschy, this garden restaurant has a
reasonably priced and appealing menu of continental and Bahamian favorites like grouper
almandine and fettuccine with blackened shrimp.
Double D's BAHAMIAN $
(E Bay St; mains $5-10; 24hr) Adventuresome eaters can try waaaay down-home Ba-
hamian dishes like pig feet souse (stew) at this 24-hour stripmall joint, across from the
Paradise Island Exit Bridge.
Cable Beach
All the hotels on Cable Beach have their own restaurants, cafes and beach bars, so you're
never far from a snack. If you're looking for a bargain, mobile lunch vendors sometimes
set up in the parking lot across from the Wyndham and Sheraton.
Arawak Cay BAHAMIAN $
(mains $8-20; breakfast, lunch & dinner; ) There's always a party on at this colorful
village of seafood shacks, known to locals as 'the Fish Fry.' No Nassau vacation is com-

friendly chatter. Tourists tend to gravitate towards Twin Brothers and Goldie's, two of the
bigger sit-down establishments, but we suggest following locals' leads and queuing up at
whatever takeout stand has the longest line.

Palace Casino, W Bay St; mains $28-48; lunch & dinner) The Wyndham's clubby steak-
house sticks to the basics: dripping hunks of sirloin, filet mignon or prime rib, dunked in
your choice of sauces (try the Bahamian-flavored Goombay curry). Lobster tails, iceberg
wedge salads and fat steakhouse fries keep things classic. Atmosphere is very 'let's make a
deal,' with leather banquettes and a wood coffered ceiling.
Amici ITALIAN $$$
( 242-327-6000; www.sheratonnassau.com ; Sheraton Nassau Beach, W Bay St; mains
$22-32; dinner) In the Sheraton, this neo-trattoria is less cozy and more corporate than
one might wish, but its menu of Italian classics - calamari, chicken Florentine, veal scalop-
