Imperial Cafeteria & Take-Away BAHAMIAN $
(Marlborough St; mains $5-10; breakfast, lunch & dinner) Ignore the yellow Formica,
this is consistently the best-value takeout food in Nassau, beloved of many Bahamians and
guests of the lordly British Colonial Hilton Nassau opposite. Simple fast-food cooked well;
the fish is fresh, light and crispy, the burgers are tasty and the $3 breakfasts are filling.
Conch Fritters Bar & Grill BAHAMIAN $
(Marlborough St; mains $9-16; lunch & dinner) Clean, shiny fast food-style place spe-
cializing in conch, barbeque ribs, wings and other local snacks.
East of Downtown
Under the Paradise Island Exit Bridge, Potter's Cay market ( Click here ) has straight-from-
the-sea conch dishes and an exuberant Bahamian atmosphere. Open til late, but be careful
at night. Heading further east, ritzy marinas and residential subdivisions mean restaurants
catering to an upscale yachtie/expat clientele.
Balduccino Fine Foods GOURMET MARKET $
( www.balduccino.com ; Cotton Tree Trader's Plaza, E Bay St; mains $8-14; 8am-7pm
Mon-Sat) Nassau's best gourmet market brims with hard-to-find international foods like
Swiss yogurt, boneless quail, artichokes, gluten-free flour and organic chocolate, making it
popular with yachties looking to stock up for their next island hop. The espresso counter
and pre-prepared baguette sandwiches draw homesick European expats for miles around.
Luciano's of Chicago ITALIAN $$$
( 242-323-7770; www.lucianosnassau.com ; 701 E Bay St; dinner mains $23-46;
lunch Mon-Fri, dinner daily) This handsome Italian restaurant, with its warmly lit dining
rooms and romantic harbor-side balconies, is a perennial favorite with expats and yachties.
The huge menu runs the gamut of northern Italian dishes, from osso bucco to tortellini with
pesto, with a few nods to its Bahamian location (think hog snapper alla Romana).
Poop Deck SEAFOOD $$$
( 242-393-8175; www.thepoopdeckrestaurants.com ; E Bay St; mains $18-50; lunch
& dinner) It's a pick-your-lobster kind of place where old salts ogle fresh snappers at the
been-there-forever front bar. On the back deck, locals and tourists select from a seafood
menu heavy on Bahamian favorites - conch, grouper, mahi-mahi - that's complemented by
scenic views of the harbor. Second location in Sandyport (
242-327-3325; W Bay St).
