should look like. You end up drawing the same things over and over again—that
is, drawing from memory. To break out of that habit, study as many examples as
possible of action and performance to add to your understanding of how people
and animals react and move.
Practice gesture drawings to capture not a portrait of the people or animals
you're studying, but the essence of their performance. When you do gesture work,
find the inner line of action first (the red line in Figure 3.10) and sketch it in.
Then loosely rough in the rest of the figure. Remember, you're trying to capture
the action and performance, not draw a portrait.
