FiGuRe 1.5 Snakes and Ladders was used to teach moral lessons.
It's interesting to note that, although it was a game that children were
encouraged to play to reinforce their understanding of virtuous behavior,
most were forbidden to play it on the Sabbath.
The first recognized board game produced in America was Travellers' Tour
Through the United States, published in 1822. Although the original designer
and artist aren't known, the publisher was F. & R. Lockwood. It was also a roll-
and-move game using a teetotum. Unlike other boards games like The Mansion
of Happiness that were British imports and based on moral values, this game
allowed players to roll and then advance across a map of the United States—at
the time this game was published, the furthest-west states were Missouri and
Louisiana.
