The physics of the World
Your environment might exist in the far reaches of outer space where gravity
doesn't come into play, or deep under the sea where intense gravity impedes move-
ment. There may be other factors to consider, such as weather, what surface the
character is on (are they slipping across ice or slogging through mud?), or chang-
ing aspects like rock ridges or venomous plants bursting out of the ground.
Wherever your game takes place, one of the design elements you must con-
sider is the physics of the world your characters need to maneuver. This process
can allow for some fun gameplay design by adding twists and turns in the form
of atmospheres that differ from what the player is used to (life on planet Earth).
BioShock is played deep under the sea in an abandoned city that is steeped in
Steampunk design elements. As shown in Figure 3.16, a screenshot from BioShock 2
(developed by 2K Marin) , some of the gameplay occurs in air-filled rooms and hall-
ways inside the city. At other times, the action takes place underwater.
steampunk is a style
of art that combines
science fiction and
fantasy elements,
which are highly
influenced by the
elaborately designed
steam-powered
machinery of the
19th century.

the physics of this world.
