13.8.3 Anaerobiosis made efficient
Pasteur already proposed that the aerobic bacteria were consuming free molecular oxygen (O 2 )in
mixed cultures, which also gave the opportunity for the anaerobic bacteria to survive beneath the
aerobic flora. When E. coli was used for the purpose of oxygen removal, an E h value (oxidation-
reduction potential) of 440mV was achieved (Porter, 1948). Much higher values up to + 50mV
