bio-composites and micro fibrils. UPM also has a goal to reduce own energy use by 30% in
primarily the paper mills.
In East Asia APP (Asia Pulp and Paper, part of Sinar Mas group) is building new newsprint
machines in China where the market for this type of products is still increasing rapidly (APP,
2011). They also produce packaging and tissue and the focus is not to be narrow and specialized,
but more to have very low production cost. They have many environmental organizations taking
actions towards their use of rain forests, but claim to have taken strong environmental actions
last few years and actually claim they follow EU Ecolabel. The other major South East Asian
company based in Singapore isAPRIL, which has been primarily focusing on fine paper produced
in Indonesia, but coming from dissolving pulp originally. They are today one of the biggest
producers of bleached hardwood pulp, with also ECF, Elementary Chlorine Free. They have a
broad spectrum of products like liquid packaging, printing and writing paper, tissues, shopping
bags, food packaging, magazines and books, which shows that the specialization has not yet been
driven that strongly. It is still more important to grow than specializing on a specific segment
(APRIL, 2011). Also APRIL is growing in China with a pulp mill starting up 2010 in Rizhao and
a fine paper machine in Guangdong and plans for liner board, according to AJ Devanesan, CEO
(Asp, 2011).
Visy pulp and paper, with the base inAustralia is focusing very much on packages for fruit and
heavy products, and is expanding with this globally. From 2006 to 2010, Weyerhaeuser reduced
their production by around 50% on structural lumber board and oriented strand board. During
the same period, pulp production went down by 20% while paper slightly increased. The major
volume was on fluff pulp for tissue (Weyerhaeuser, 2010). A main focus for Weyerhaeuser is to
manage the 6 million acres of timberland which may “provide a source of sustainable products,
green energy and carbon sequestration as well as a host of other solutions for challenges facing
