The pulp and paper industry consumes a large proportion of the world's biomass and is the sixth-
largest energy consumer industry in Europe (CEPI, 2008). The industry has made a significant
contribution to the European economic cluster, generating an annual turnover of more than EUR
400 billion (Gebart, 2006). According to the Swedish forest industries, Sweden's pulp and paper
industry is the third largest in Europe and represents 6% of the world's total pulp production
(Swedish Forest Industries, 2010). The modern pulp industry has an established infrastructure for
handling and processing biomass, which means it is possible to lay the foundation of biorefineries
to co-produce different bioenergy products including electricity, chemicals or biofuels together
