Vegas from November to early April if your fantasy vacation includes lounging by
the pool. The vast majority of pools are outdoor ones here, and many simply shut
down in these months, as the desert can get quite chilly in winter (see the chart
below). Those that don't close compensate by heating the water, but the moment
you climb out of the pool you'll feel like you've unwittingly joined the Polar Bear
Club. Despite that problem, I like Vegas in the winter, but you should bring
layers, as you may need to bundle up.
In terms of holiday periods, Vegas no longer slows down to any great extent
over Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any of those holidays that people tra-
ditionally spend with their families. More and more are choosing to eat turkey
at the buffet so that they can get right back to baccarat. Early December, how-
ever, is traditionally slow, as is January and many periods during the summer
(except when there's a convention in town or a major sports event worth bet-
ting on), so if you're looking to save money, those are good times to go. Be
aware, however, that some shows go on hiatus in December and over Christmas
week, so if going to the theater is a big reason for your visit, there may be bet-
ter times to arrive.
