The White Dome trail is also popular, leading hikers through a slot canyon and
past the stone ruins of the abandoned movie set for The Professionals, starring Burt
Lancaster, which was filmed back in the '60s. The park no longer allows filmmakers
to leave traces, and for good reason: It's a popular filming spot. You may recognize
the scenery from Star Trek: Generations, Total Recall, Iron Eagle, Heldorado, and more.
From the road within the park you'll be able to see formations that carry such
apt names as Bee Hives and Elephant Rock, along with another called the Seven
Sisters. But it's just as enjoyable to discover and name your own shapes within the
structures. As this is the unabashed desert, summertime temperatures can top 110.
Visits are easier at other times of the year, but if you really must see it then, arrive
here as early in the day as possible, carry at least a gallon of water per person, and
plan to get out before noontime.
