In-Depth Information
the minimum bet is $5, players will be betting at least $15 per hand). Players can
also pay $1 to a progressive pot (it has an obscene house advantage, but that's why
it's called gambling!). The object of this game is to get a pair of 10s or better by
combining your cards with the community cards. The dealer deals two commu-
nity cards and the three cards to each player, all face-down. Once a player has con-
sulted her cards, she can take back one of her original bets or can stay in and let
it ride. The dealer then turns over another community card. The player has
another chance to take back one of her bets or let it ride. The dealer then turns
over the second community card. At this stage, the dealer checks all players' hands
and collects losing wagers and pays out winning hands. The typical payoff ranges
from even money for a pair of “10”s to 1,000 to 1 for a royal flush. Note that if
you're holding a pair of “10”s or better in your first three cards, you're a guaran-
teed winner and want to let your bets ride the whole way through.
Pai Gow Poker
Originally an Asian game played with tiles, Pai Gow has been adapted to playing
cards and morphed into a form of poker. There's a lot going on in Pai Gow. The
dealing is elaborate and complicated, involving dice and counting off counter-
clockwise who gets the first set of cards. This is also a game where players can opt
to be the bank, further complicating the rules. Like many games, Pai Gow is dif-
ficult to describe and more difficult for a novice to picture, but once you're sitting
at the table it's fairly easy to pick up.
The game consists of making two hands out of a single seven-card hand dealt
to you. The dealer starts out with a deck of 53 cards—a normal deck plus a joker,
which can be used as an ace or to complete a straight, a flush, or a straight flush.
Players place bets and the dealer hands out sets of seven cards to everyone,
including himself. Players cannot discuss their hands. Each player then divides his
seven cards into two hands, one with two cards and the other made up of five
cards. The goal is to make each hand the highest possible, with the caveat that the
five-card hand must always be ranked higher than the two-card hand or you auto-
matically lose. Poker rules apply when it comes to card value, with one exception:
A-2-3-4-5 is the second-highest straight, between A-K-Q-J-10 and K-Q-J-10-9.
The lowest possible pair is a set of “2”s, and the highest is a pair of aces. But
remember, if you have a pair of aces in your two-card card set, you must have
something higher in your 5-card set.
Once players have arranged their cards they put them face-down on the table.
The dealer then reveals what he has, and proceeds to go around exposing the cards
of the players, comparing them with his own. If the player wins both hands, he
gets paid even money on the amount bet, minus a 5% commission. If the dealer
wins one hand and the player wins one hand, it's a push and no money is
exchanged. If the dealer wins both hands, he or she takes the player's wager. Ties
go to the house, giving it an advantage.
ROULETTE
This game involves nothing more complicated than selecting a number or group
of numbers and betting that a ball traveling around a circle will land on it.
Roulette is a great place to start in a casino if you're an unsure gambler and want
to get used to the interaction of a table game. Though the house has a distinct
