Jordan accedes to the World Trade Organisation, and the European Free Trade Associ-
ation (2001). Trade significantly increases under the free-trade accord with the USA
and Jordanian Qualifying Industrial Zones (QIZ).
2001
The US invasion of Iraq is strenuously protested by Arab countries. King Abdullah
sides publicly with Baghdad while complying, officially at least, with the UN embargo
on trade with Iraq.
2005
Three hotels in Amman are blown up in coordinated suicide attacks in Amman, mas-
terminded by Al-Qaeda. Tourism, booming since the 1994 peace treaty, takes an imme-
diate hit.
2007
As one of many steps in the modernisation of the country's political, economic and so-
cial structure, 20% of seats in municipal councils are reserved for women.
2008
Iraq contributes to the maintenance of the 500,000 Iraqi refugees in Jordan. The Iraqi
arrival is the fourth influx of refugees in the modern history of this geographically
small country.
2011
Protests in Amman mark the 'Arab Spring', a period of uprising against dictatorship
across the region. Jordan braces for a fifth wave of immigration - after severe disturb-
ances in Syria.
