ies of a globalised world, supportive of social and economic reform and committed to
stamping out corruption.
Troublesome Neighbours
Like his father, Abdullah has proved adept at handling foreign affairs - imperative, con-
sidering the neighbourhood Jordan shares. Wedged between Iraq, Syria and Israel and the
Palestinian Territories, the country has had to shelter millions of refugees in recent dec-
ades. This has strained healthcare and education systems and driven house prices beyond
the reach of many Jordanians (who often earn a minimum wage of less than $155 per
month). Many Iraqi refugees have brought considerable wealth with them, allowing them
to enter the Jordanian property market, inevitably bumping up prices.
More significantly, it has changed the demography of the country forever. While those
of Palestinian origin belong to a prospering majority and refugees from the ongoing con-
flict in Iraq find permanent sanctuary in Jordan, the country is bracing for a fourth influx
of refugees (following the Arab Spring) within half a century ( Click here ) . As such, im-
migration is a major challenge of the coming decade.
A Bright Future
Despite the mixed origins of its people, the current political and economic difficulties and
the insecurity of life in a volatile region, Jordanians are united in their pride for their
country. And there's a lot to be proud of. The monarchy under King Abdullah continues
the acclaimed role of peacemaker between Arab and Western interests, Jordan is a region-
al leader in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable tourism, and its capital
city is enjoying a modern renaissance.
In common with many Arab countries, Jordan is at a crossroads as it faces integration
within the modern, democratic, global community. Unlike many of its neighbours,
however, Jordan has recognised that the past is part of its future, and while the politicians
plan a way to maximise on the country's unique legacy, the Bedouin still herd their sheep
across an unchanged landscape in effortless continuity with the ancient past.
