Mohammed Mutlak Camp$

spot overlooking Jebel Qattar, this camp is run by brothers who speak English well. Din-
ner may, if you're lucky, include delicious lamb cooked in a zerb (Bedouin oven buried in
the sand). Transport by 4WD to the camp is free if you don't visit anywhere en route. You
can come by camel (from JD25, 2ΒΌ hours). Hiking opportunities include a 45-minute hike
to see the merging of red and white sand dunes. There is no electricity, but light is
provided by gas lamp.
Rum Stars Camp$

camps situated deepest in the desert, it takes about 20 minutes by 4WD to reach. In a mag-
nificent spot, tucked into the side of a mountain and overlooking quintessential Wadi Rum
landscape, the camp is simple but well-run by Bedouin brothers. The owner, who speaks
excellent English and is passionate about his Bedouin heritage, will collect you from Rum
Village. Half day jeep tours cost JD50 for a maximum of four people (full day with lunch-
box JD70). Local guided hiking costs JD50 for a five-hour trip.

Bait Ali Lodge$$

small/medium/large cabin 45/48/53; ) If you want to stay in the area but are not wild
about roughing it, then Bait Ali offers a compromise. Tucked behind a hill, with a sublime
view of the wilderness, this upmarket eco-friendly camp is clearly signposted just off the
road, 15km from the Desert Highway and 9km from the Wadi Rum visitor centre. The ac-
commodation (either in army tents or cabins, some with en suite showers and toilets) is
basic but includes linen and there is a separate shower block with hot water for men and
women. The facilities include an excellent restaurant with an extensive nightly barbecue.
Wrapped up in blanket coats, reclining on sheepskin, peering through the roaring fire at
cloaked Arab men - this is the way to eat roasted meats, in the company of great
storytellers. There is even an attractively designed swimming pool. You can pitch your
own tent (JD10) or park a campervan (JD10) and use the shower block. The owners are
