Telephone
There are a number of telephone booths outside the general post office, and several stalls
nearby sell telephone cards. Other private telephone agencies are located on the main
streets, and some moneychangers also offer telephone services. Note that international
calls from Aqaba are up to five times cheaper than in Wadi Rum.
Tourist Information
The tourist office Offline map Google map ( /fax 2013363; Baladiya Circle;
8am-2.30pm Sun-Thu) is located in a kiosk in the middle of a new park between carriage-
ways. The tourist office just east of the roundabout has lots of leaflets and precious little
else despite friendly staff. There's another branch inside Aqaba Museum.
Visa Extensions
Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA; 2091000; www.aqabazone.com ;
Ash-Sherif al-Hussein bin Ali St-Amman Hwy) Opposite Safeway. You need to register
here if you were given a free visa on arrival in Aqaba and plan to stay in Jordan for more
than 14 days. The website has some useful information about Aqaba.
Police station ( 2012411; Ar-Reem St; 7am-9pm Sat-Thu) Opposite the bus station.
This is the place to come for an extension of your visa for up to three months. These ex-
tensions are usually available on the spot and are free. It's best to go earlier in the day
(8am to 3pm). Aqaba is the only reliable place to get your visa extended outside Amman.
Getting There & Away
Air
Aqaba has Jordan's only commercial airport ( 2012111) outside Amman, although it
only awakes from slumber when a flight is about to leave or arrive. There are daily flights
to Amman and intermittent charter flights. The airport is 10km north of town.
Royal Jordanian ( 2016555; www.rj.com ; Ash-Sherif al-Hussein bin Ali St;
9am-5pm Sun-Thu) Operates flights to Amman's Queen Alia International Airport on Fri-
day and Saturday. Their office at the airport is the place to buy, confirm or change Royal
Jordanian or Royal Wings air tickets. Tickets to Amman cost JD37 one way.
Royal Wings ( www.royalwings.com.jo ) A subsidiary of Royal Jordanian flies between
Aqaba and Amman twice daily.
