location (close to the entrance to Petra and overlooking sandstone bluffs) makes this a
popular top-end choice, although the rooms are not as luxurious as one might expect for
the price. The heated swimming pool is useful outside of high summer and a lovely ter-
race offers summer barbecues. The hotel also has a Jacuzzi, sauna, tennis courts, coffee
makers in rooms and self-service laundry facilities.

closer to the entrance to Petra without sleeping in a cave - and indeed the hotel's bar (the
famous Cave Bar) is located in one. Although not the same quality as its sister, the Crown
Plaza, the guesthouse does offer use of the latter's facilities. Choose from motel-like
chalets or sunny (if cramped) rooms in the main building.

( 2156401; www.lamaisonhotel.com.jo ; s/d/tr JD70/80/90; ) The brass jardinières
decorating the foyer set the tone for this good-value hotel, just uphill from the entrance to
Petra. With quality furniture, generous fluffy duvets, and a stylish recent makeover in
black and white, La Maison gives some of the bigger hotels a run for their money. Ask
about the brighter end rooms, which offer 120-degree views. The roof terrace is a great
place to catch the sunset in summer.

Bedouin camps stretch across the foyer and restaurant walls of this old favourite, 300m
from the entrance to Petra. The common areas have been spruced up in lavender hues that
may not be to everyone's taste but the rooms all sport decent furniture and big bathtubs.
Some rooms are very dark so ask for one with a view. The buffet in the outside restaurant
(JD10) is popular with tour groups.
