summer rooftop camping JD2) This quirky assembly of rooms, sitting areas and tiny, leafy
courtyards has its own appeal, with a majlis draped in memorabilia, including plastic
roses, sheesha bottles and backgammon sets. With names like 'Flying Carpet' and 'Sunset
Royal', the small, unheated rooms, some of which are decorated with travellers' graffiti,
are a winner with younger backpackers. There's free tea, a washing machine, shared hot
showers and rooftop seating. Lunch and dinner of 22 dishes including chicken, salad and
dips (JD5) can be provided on request. The guesthouse offers free transfer to and from the

Al-Nawatef Camp$
( 2270413, 079 6392079; nawatefcamp@hotmail.com; half board JD15) If the accom-
modation at Dana is full, consider staying at this privately owned camp . Perched on the
edge of a neighbouring wadi, it has a fabulous location and is run by an enterprising local
who knows the area 'because', he says, 'it runs in my blood'. The camp comprises a basic
shared shower block, goat-hair chalets with beds and blankets (but no linen) and balconies
with exceptional views. In spring, the camp is surrounded by black iris. Tea and coffee is
available all day, delicious dinners are rustled up from the ground oven and a free trans-
port service is offered to Dana village. You can set your own tent up in the grounds for
JD5 and order dinner (JD5) or breakfast (JD2) to suit. The camp is signposted 2km off the
King's Highway, 5km south of the Dana turning in Qadsiyya. The owner can collect you
from the main road. He also organises onward travel via local buses and will drop you at
the relevant junction.
