Information
The entrance to Mt Nebo is signposted on the Madaba-Dead Sea road, next to a visitor
centre (built several years ago but still not open). Tickets are currently bought from the
guard at the gate. Smoking is not allowed in the complex. Toilets can be found next to the
museum.
The authoritative Town of Nebo by Fr Sylvestre J Salter and Fr Bellarmiro Bagatti de-
tails this and other Christian sites in Jordan. More portable is Mount Nebo by Michelle
Piccirillo. Both are usually available for sale inside the church. The Jordan Tourism Board
publishes an excellent pamphlet entitled Mount Nebo, which summarises the site's signi-
ficance. The encyclopaedic Mosaics of Madaba is on display inside the church.
Getting There & Away
From Madaba, shared taxis to Mt Nebo cost around JD1.500; a private taxi from Madaba
costs JD4 (or JD8 return, with one hour waiting time).
From Mt Nebo the road continues for 17km into the Jordan Valley to meet the main
Amman-Dead Sea Highway, offering excellent views of the Dead Sea. The drive takes
you from the tree line of olives and root vegetables, past a rocky landscape of prickly
pears to the ochre-coloured hills of the Dead Sea depression. The yellow turns to red as
the road twists past iron-rich escarpments and finally descends to the highly cultivated
Jordan Valley, dotted with greenhouse plastic. There is no reliable public transport along
this route.
