pending on size). Another large handicraft centre specialising in mosaics is the Jordan
Jewel ( 3241364) , located 1km before Mt Nebo on the road from Madaba. The owner
of this large emporium employs a large number of physically challenged locals to help of-
fer marginalised people a way back into society.
Madaba is also famous for its colourful hand-loomed kilims ( Click here ) , which flap
and dance outside shops throughout town (especially between the Burnt Palace and St Ge-
orge's Church). Buying one of these rugs is more than just a purchase, it's a great way to
get under the skin of the town: chats and tea with the rug-sellers are de rigueur.
Spare some time to amble along Al- Yarmouk St: here you will find water pipes, wo-
men's headscarves and shops selling Jordanian sweets. The street comes alive at night and
it's a good place to mingle with local shoppers to gain a flavour of the town.
There are several warehouse-like emporiums selling handicrafts but they are mainly in-
tended for tour groups and lack the personal touch of shops in town. If you are into one-
stop shopping, however, you can find these outlets along the road to Mt Nebo.
