In-Depth Information
Nature Reserves
The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) runs two nature reserves strad-
dling the central plateau, wedged between the King's Highway and the Dead Sea High-
way. Mujib Biosphere Reserve ( Click here ) is more usually accessed from the Dead Sea
and is covered in that chapter. Dana Biosphere Reserve ( Click here ) is accessed via the
small upland village of Dana, just off the King's Highway. Protecting a rich diversity of
flora and fauna, Dana Biosphere Reserve offers the visitor a chance to camp and hike in
the reserve's stunning landscape.
Dangers & Annoyances
Hiking in any of the wadis that crisscross the region from November to February should
be approached with caution, if not avoided, because of the danger of flash floods. After
rains, walls of water roll out of the canyons without warning, even on a cloudless day, up-
rooting trees and strewning boulders in their wake. Take advice before setting out, or tell
your hotel manager where you are heading.
It can get seriously cold in winter with snow and hailstones. Many visitors get caught
out without adequate clothing as the daytime temperatures may still be beguilingly warm.
Because of the gap in public transport where the King's Highway crosses Wadi Mujib,
it's easy to get stranded either side of the wadi. Plan an early start to be sure of reaching
the nearest town in daylight.
Getting There & Away
Of Jordan's three highways running north to south, the King's Highway is by far the most
interesting, with a host of historical attractions lying on the road or nearby. The highway,
which is little more than a rural road for most of its length, connects Madaba to Petra via
Crusader castles, Roman forts, biblical sites, a windswept Nabataean temple and some
epic landscapes - including the majestic Wadi Mujib.
The King's Highway is connected with the Dead Sea Highway via spectacular hairpin
roads ( Click here ) that are a highlight in their own right. Most public transport, however,
connects with the King's Highway via the Desert Highway. Madaba is directly accessible
from the main international airport (without the need to enter Amman).
