In-Depth Information
Information
Entry to the site (adult/child under 10 JD12/free; 8am-4pm Nov-Mar, to 6pm Apr-Oct)
includes a one-hour guided tour and shuttle-bus service which departs every 30 minutes to
the main complex, close to the sensitive border with Israel and the Palestinian Territories.
Collect a brochure and map at the main gate, where there are toilets and a few desultory
souvenir shops, hit hard by the recent downturn in tourism. The flies here are of plague
proportions in spring so bringing repellent is a good idea.
Getting There & Away
The site is near South Shuna, at the southern end of the Jordan Valley. Coming from Am-
man, follow signs to the 'Baptism Site' along the main road to the Dead Sea. Tours from
the budget hotels in Amman and Madaba often include this site in a Dead Sea day trip
from around JD50 for a maximum of four people. Getting there by public transport is
more difficult. Take any minibus to Suweimah and ask to be dropped at the Al-Maghtas
junction. The Dead Sea is to the left of the junction, the baptism site to the right. There's
no public transport for the 5km trip to the visitor centre. Take plenty of water if you intend
to walk or hitch.
