in town dating from the late 19th and early-20th century. Few of these gracious limestone
buildings are open to the public, but some of the elegant facades are worth viewing. Stair-
ways lead up to fine views from atop Jebel al-Qala'a.
Salt Archaeological Museum

This delightful
little museum is located in a well-restored Ottoman-era building and covers the local his-
tory of the Jordan Valley area with excellent information boards in English. The down-
stairs rooms focus on glass and pottery (some dating back 5000 years), spanning the Ro-
man, Byzantine and Islamic eras, mostly from around Salt but also from Deir Alla and
Tell Nimrin (from where Joshua is thought to have led the Israelites across the River
