The city was virtually destroyed by the earthquake that shook the whole region in 747.
The last occupiers of Pella were the Mamluks of the 13th and 14th centuries. While Pella
enjoyed a brief renaissance, the defeat of the Mamluks by the Ottomans caused the resid-
ents of Pella to flee, ending more than 6000 years of continuous settlement. Today the ru-
ins of Pella lie a few kilometres away from the modern Arab village of Taqabat Fahl.
