Day 12
Rent a car in Tromsø and
head north for the last leg of the
trip: a 450km (280-mile) run over
the
Arctic Highway.
Spend the
night in Alta. Travel is slow because
the road wraps around inlets and
fjords.
Day 13
Continue driving north to
Hammerfest,
the world's northern-
most town of any significant size.
Stay overnight.
Day 14
From Hammerfest, take
an excursion boat directly to the
North Cape.
Those with more time
can drive to Honningsvåg, the
world's northernmost village and
the gateway to the North Cape.
Buses leave its marketplace daily for
the cape, a 35km (22-mile) run.
Return to Tromsø, where air con-
nections can be made to Oslo and
your return flight to North America
or elsewhere.

Days 1 through 4
Spend the first
4 days as described in “If You Have
1 Week,” above.
Day 5
Explore
Oslo
in greater
depth, visiting Akershus Castle,
with its Norwegian Resistance
Museum, and the National Gallery.
Take one of the walking tours
mapped out for Oslo in chapter 5—
or two, if you have the time and the
stamina.
Day 6
Drive north from Oslo
along the E6 to the ski resort of
Lillehammer,
site of the 1994
Winter Olympics. Stop for lunch at
Gjøvik, “the white town on Lake
Mjøsa,” arriving in Lillehammer in
time to view the Sandvig Collec-
tions. Either overnight in Lilleham-
mer or return to Oslo.
Day 7
Leave either Oslo or Lille-
hammer by train, depending on
where you spent the night, heading
west for
Bergen
across the rooftop
of Europe.
Day 8
Spend the day sightseeing
Bergen,
visiting Trolls' Hill (the
summer villa of composer Edvard
Grieg).
Day 9
Take a trip to the
Hardan-
gerfjord
and the
Folgefonn gla-
cier.
Bus trips depart from Bergen
for this full-day tour.
Day 10
Board an express steamer
from Bergen to
Gudvangen
to see
the Sognefjord, the longest fjord in
Norway. From Gudvangen, go by
bus to Voss, a famous ski resort.
Day 11
Spend another day in
Voss,
taking in nearby attractions..
Day 12
Return to
Bergen
for an
overnight stay.
Day 13
From Bergen, go to
Åle-
sund
at the top of the fjord country
and explore the town.
Day 14
While still in Ålesund,
take a sightseeing tour for the day
to
Geiranger,
one of the most
famous resorts in the fjord country.
Explore the waterfalls in and
around the area. Return to Ålesund
for the night.
Day 15
From Ålesund, make air
connections to
Trondheim,
the
third-largest city of Norway and a
historic capital. Explore some of its
attractions.
Day 16
Explore
Trondheim
fully
and spend the night.

Follow the
schedule outlined for Days 10 to 14
listed in “If You Have 2 Weeks,”
above.

Hotel passes (see below) can save you
big money. In addition, there are sev-
eral imaginative lodging possibilities,
other than hotels, that are not only
workable but a lot of fun and a change
of pace.
