Amalie Hotell Set in a former office building, almost immediately adja-
cent to the Radisson SAS Hotel, this hotel is known for its cheap rates and sim-
ple but well-maintained and comfortable rooms. (It's also known for an outdoor
bronze statue of a naked girl who looks perpetually chilly against the rains and
snows of midwinter Tromsø.) Bedrooms are simple and cheerful, evoking the
dormitory room you might have occupied in college, without frills and with
sturdy, utilitarian wooden furniture. Each comes with a small private bathroom
with shower.

Forsoket Lying a 10-minute walk from the heart of the city, this converted
town house has been a B&B since it started welcoming guests from around the
world in 1960. Traffic noise might be a problem, but otherwise it's an affordable
and most reliable recommendation. This place functions somewhat like a hos-
tel, with a fully equipped kitchen shared by guests, some of whom make their
own meals. The English-speaking innkeeper, Raymond Abrahamsen, offers you
midsize and homelike bedrooms, each comfortably furnished, with a shared
bathroom with shower.

Skipperhuset Seng & Mat “The Skipper's House” (its English name) has
been home to sea captains for four generations. Today it's been converted to
receive B&B guests and is one of the best B&Bs in the area. Skipperhuset lies
on a tiny island across Christian Sound. To reach it, you can take a car ferry
departing on the mainland from Flekkefjord, costing 112NOK ($16) for a
round-trip ticket. The guesthouse is a big town house, with small to midsize
bedrooms, each comfortably furnished. A family unit is in a separate building
with one double bed and one single bed. Bedrooms are equipped with a small
bathroom with shower. The house lies next to a boathouse, and a boat can be
rented from the hosts, Leif and Grethe Waage Larsen. Dock fishing is also pos-
sible outside the house, where there is a terrace opening onto a quay.

Arctandria SEAFOOD This place is known as the best fish restaurant
in a town by locals who often make their living from the sea and have high stan-
dards for seafood. It's set on the top floor of a sprawling antique warehouse
immediately adjacent to the water, in the commercial heart of town. The some-
what somber, museum-like interior softens during the dinner hour, when flick-
ering candles add a sense of romance. Virtually everything on the menu, with a
few exceptions, features fresh fish, except for whale meat, seal meat, and, in the
words of the manager, “an occasional reindeer, but only if it's caught while swim-
ming between nearby islands offshore.” Starters include mussel soup; a platter
