Inside is an intriguing array of angled glass skylights, stone floors, soaring
atriums, and plants. As a reaffirmation of the hotel's importance, during the
May 2002 royal wedding of Norway's Princess Martha-Louise, members of the
royal families of Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg, Spain, and Denmark were all
housed here in what could have been a security- and protocol-related night-
mare—and it all went off with barely a hitch. Rooms are comfortable and taste-
fully contemporary, outfitted in pale tones of gray, earth tones, and/or blue.

Comfort Hotel Bakeriet One of my favorite hotels in Trond-
heim occupies the mock-fortified, solid-looking premises of what functioned
between 1863 and 1963 as the largest bakery in Norway. Today some aspects of
the place might remind you of a museum, thanks to a number of displays that
showcase the ovens, cooling racks, and paraphernalia associated with the build-
ing during its early days. Kids should eat up these displays, including elaborate
costumes worn by some of the bakery employees around the turn of the 20th-
century, which decorate the upstairs hallways that lead to the large and very
comfortable bedrooms. Many of these have carefully finished half-paneling and
easy chairs and settees, and each has a large tiled bathroom with a shower.
There's even an underground railway, once used to transport raw materials for
the bread and its ovens, that stretches from here to a point in Trondheim near
the cathedral.

Scandic Hotel Residence On the market square opposite the Royal Palace,
the Hotel Residence, built in 1915 in Jugend (Art Nouveau) style, has recently
been renovated. Accommodations are tastefully decorated, and the units in front
open onto the marketplace. The generously sized guest rooms have triple-glazed
windows and sturdy, comfortable furniture, including large beds with firm mat-
tresses. The big marble bathrooms offer great shelf space, tub/shower combina-
tions, and, in some cases, bidets.

Scandic Prinsen This six-story hotel from the early 1960s was renovated in
2000 and is today one of the city's better hotels. Set in the heart of the historic
center, the hotel is a blend of harmonious colors and solid, substantial furnish-
ings. It caters mainly to business clients in the winter but is a favorite with
