Ålesund Museum The development of hunting and fishing meth-
ods, shipbuilding, and life in Ålesund before and after the big fire of 1904 are
the subjects of this museum off Korsegata near the harbor. The museum's focal
points include a large-scale model of Ålesund and one of the most famous boats
of the Norwegian fjords, the Brudeegget. Originally built in 1904 in the difficult-
to-capsize shape of an egg, it became the prototype of thousands of covered res-
cue boats. Its sturdy design has helped save hundreds of lives after mishaps
during stormy weather in the Norwegian seas. Especially interesting are exhibits
of the dreaded German occupation from 1940 to 1945.

Atlanterhavsparken This is one of Scandinavia's finest aquariums.
Lying along the oceanfront at Tueneset, 3km (1 3 4 miles) west of Ålesund, it is in
fact one of the largest aquariums in Europe. In addition to its tanks of marine life,
it offers hiking trails, a cafeteria, bathing sites, and even outstanding diving ven-
ues. The sea park was constructed into coastal surroundings and seems at one with
the ocean. Kids are always delighted to see divers feeding the fish by hand in the
Atlantic Ocean tank. This underwater scene takes place at the 1pm feeding.

Sunnmøre Museum & Borgundkaupangen The site of this settle-
ment was the most important ecclesiastical center between Bergen and Trondheim
from the end of the Viking period (around 1000) to 1500. The open-air museum
contains some 50 original buildings dating from the late Middle Ages to around
1900. Outbuildings include a sawmill, a boat-builder's shed, a fishermen's inn, and
a small 1743 boarding school. The boat halls feature 30 special boats—one of
Norway's largest collections of fishing boats as well as an exact replica of the
Fjørtoft boat from the Viking era. The Museum Quay is home to the Heland, a
fishing boat built in 1937 and a “Shetland Bus” dating from World War II. The
Borgundknarren is an exact replica of a Viking trading vessel from 1000. A replica
of the Kvalsund (8th c.) drops anchor at the quay in summer. The main building
focuses on the cultural history of Sunnmøre, and also contains a cafe and a hand-
icrafts shop. The Medieval Museum was built over the excavated remains of 12th-
century buildings. The exhibit depicts daily life in a market town back then.
