ON THE OUTSKIRTS
Solstrand Hotel & Bad This is the most prestigious resort in the
region around Bergen. Discerning travelers appreciate its sense of whimsy, iso-
lated location beside the fjord, and history that stretches from 1896. Everything
about it evokes the Belle Epoque, including the ocher-colored, gabled exterior
dramatically positioned between backyard gardens and the rock-lined coast of
the fjord. The setting evokes a romantic getaway to the countryside. Colors used
throughout the hotel are rich and jewel-toned. Bedrooms are cheerfully painted,
high-ceilinged affairs, with a sophisticated mixture of antique and modern fur-
niture. Each unit comes with a luxurious private bathroom with tub and shower.
The in-house restaurant serves lunch buffets, priced between 300NOK and
340NOK ($43 and $48) per person, and a la carte at dinner. Advance reserva-
tions are recommended for meals that—especially on Sunday between 1 and
3pm—are a magnet for extended families from the surrounding region. The
hotel's many amenities include free use of rowboats and putt-putt motorboats as
well as access to a nearby 9-hole golf course.

VERY EXPENSIVE
Kafe Krystall CONTINENTAL Thanks to Jugendstil acces-
sories, this intimate restaurant's decor evokes Vienna in the era of Sigmund
Freud. Old-fashioned table settings, jazz background music, and the quiet min-
istrations of a single server (Bergen-born owner Vibeke Bjørvik) create the feel-
ing that you're in a dignified private home. Menu items change every 3 weeks.
Our party sampled a menu that began delectably with spiced and pan-seared red
snapper, accompanied by a shellfish guacamole and mussels sauce, followed by
a divine creamed champagne soup topped with curried, marinated scallops. The
rest of the menu consisted of well-balanced flavors, such as the baked sole with
fresh tomato and green herbs, served with a fennel-and-potato purée, and the
filet of lamb with caponata. For dessert, our hearts were won over by the vanilla-
and-whiskey panna cotta topped with chocolate sauce and a serving of lime-mar-
inated raspberries.
