New Techniques in

The earlier chapters of this topic have focused on practical report samples that could be used in
both the previous version of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence and the current release. We
wanted to highlight minor differences between the releases and give those report authors who
have not upgraded an opportunity to see how they can use IBM Cognos Report Studio effectively.
This chapter gives you some examples of the key enhancements to IBM Cognos Report
Studio in version 10. There are four main enhancements in IBM Cognos Report Studio that were
introduced in the new version of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence:
Active Reports: Active reports allow report consumers to view interactive report output
without connecting to the server. In IBM Cognos 10, this new IBM Cognos Report Stu-
dio feature allows IBM Cognos Report Studio report developers to create interactive
report controls that in the past would have required extensive HTML and JavaScript
coding to achieve a similar level of interaction in reports.
Capability to add your own data: Sometimes report developers have the need to easily
maintain the report prompt selections they would like to use without having to maintain
the selection lists in the database. Also, the additional data that report authors need to
incorporate into their reports may not be available in the current systems their reports
are sourcing. The answer to this problem is the new Add Datasource feature, available
only in IBM Cognos Report Studio reports.
New Charting Engine: New charting options have been introduced to allow for more
complex representations of your data. Report authors are allowed to select creating
charts using the version 8 styles by changing an option in the report settings.
