Additional Examples
As we have shown in previous chapters, report developers can use a number of methods to
present complex data that is still readable and presentable. Additionally, report consumers want
to be able to analyze information in a manner that they have come to expect by using other tools,
such as spreadsheets.
IBM Cognos Report Studio uses HTML technology in presenting reports. As a report writer,
you can take advantage of this functionality to enhance the presentation of your report in a web
browser. In class, we discuss how you are limited only by your understanding of creating web
pages. As you add more custom code to your report, you will begin to override some of the default
functionality that makes IBM Cognos Report Studio a powerful tool, like drill-through definitions.
Some of the primary goals for your reports are that they are user-friendly, presentable, and
interactive. For example, many spreadsheet applications have features that users now expect is
reports. The first report in this chapter addresses one of these concerns.
The other report in the chapter addresses the situation where report developers will require
additional data processing that has not been done in the database because it was not possible or
feasible to incorporate all the data slicing in the reporting database design.
In this chapter, we will present the two most commonly requested functionalities that our
students bring up in class: tab-like navigation through report content, and the capability to
process data sets multiple times in order to satisfy report user requirements.
