Understanding the
Report Hierarchy
One of the keys to understanding how the IBM Cognos BI solution functions is to apply a hierar-
chical perspective on everything you do: setting up folders, applying security, formatting reports,
and so on.
IBM Cognos Report Studio is no exception to the rule. The IBM Cognos Framework
Manager model is created for use hierarchically. The report specification is stored in XML for-

information. Our perspective is that of a human resources department and the reports that we can
derive from the data warehouse. We will create several reports that will take advantage of the
hierarchical nature of report creation.
After creating individual reports, we will design a briefing book that will incorporate ele-
ments of all the other reports into a single report that can be delivered on a scheduled basis.
