In-Depth Information
From Chiang Mai, climb into the forested frontier that Thailand shares with Myan-
mar (Burma). Stop for a while in Pai , a mountain retreat for artists, backpackers
and urban Thais. Pai does a little bit of everything: partying, mainly; trekking, some;
and a lot of hanging out. Remember to bring some cool-weather clothes as the
mountains get chilly after dark. Air travel is faster but you'll miss out on the twisty-
turny mountain roads that make you feel like you earned the right to be in a Pai
state of mind.
PAI MAE HONG SON
4½ hours from Pai's bus stop.

The next stop on the northwest mountain circuit is this provincial capital that attracts
cultural enthusiasts turned off by Pai's party scene. Mae Hong Son displays its
Burmese heritage with distinctive temple architecture and signature market meals.
It is also a gateway to remote jungle landscapes and offers a less popular trekking
scene than Chiang Mai. There are daily flights back to Chiang Mai to speed up your
return to the lowlands.
