The other-worldly bay of
Ao Phang-Nga Marine National Park
is cradled between
the mainland and the northeastern coast of Phuket. Limestone mountains stand
stoically amid the water, having been eroded into Gaudi-like sculptures over millen-
nia. Semi-submerged caves create rooms where bats slumber through daylight
hours. Thick tangles of mangroves line the bay, criss-crossed by navigable canals.

Parts of the bay are protected as a national park; crowds can be thick. Opt for an
early-morning or late-evening tour to increase your likelihood of animal sightings in-
stead of human sightings.
