Thailand clings to a southern spur of the Himalayas in the north, cradles
fertile river plains at its core and tapers between two warm, shallow seas
fringed by coral reefs. Its shape is often likened to an elephant's head,
with the Malay peninsula representing the trunk. Spanning 1650km and
16 latitudinal degrees from north to south, Thailand has the most diverse
climate of any country in mainland southeast Asia.
