Children will especially enjoy the beaches, as most are in gentle bays good for be-
ginner swimmers. For more experienced swimmers, some of the Gulf and Andaman
islands have near-shore reefs for snorkelling and fish-spotting.

port.
Crocodile farms, monkey shows and tiger zoos abound in Thailand, but condi-
tions are often below Western standards. There is a new generation of ecotour pro-
jects - in Ayuthaya, Chiang Mai and Lampang - that focus on humane conditions
and animal conservation. The mahout-training schools and elephant sanctuaries
are excellent places to see the revered pachyderm in a dignified setting. Older chil-
dren will enjoy jungle-trekking tours that often include elephant rides and bamboo
rafting. Many of the beach resorts, such as Phuket and Ko Chang, also have wildlife
encounters, waterfall spotting and organised water sports.
In urban areas, kids might feel cooped up, in which case a hotel with a small
garden or swimming pool will provide necessary play space. Playgrounds are not
widespread or well maintained, though every city has an exercise park where run-
ners and families go in the early evening. Though Bangkok is lean on green, it is
