PHUKET TO AO PHANG-NGA MARINE NATIONAL PARK
PHUKET IN A NUTSHELL
You can fly to Phuket from Bangkok for a long weekend without wasting much time
in transit. The largest of Thailand's islands, (1) Phuket has lovely west-coast
beaches that are lined with professional resorts and intimate boutiques, umbrella
lounge-chairs and warm, clear water. The international standards of leisure apply in
Phuket and there are plenty of extra amenities besides swimming and sunbathing.
Treat yourself to a spa session, a cooking class and a fine meal.
Explore the old Sino-Portuguese architecture and Chinese shrines of (2) Phuket
Town and cool down at a local eatery or cafe to savour old Phuket, one of Thail-
and's few resort islands with a lengthy historical record.
Once the sun has set, the night creatures descend on (3) Patong , a rowdy strip
of neon lights, ladyboy cabarets, screaming discos and a touch of port-town seedi-
ness.
Devote one day to (4) Ao Phang-Nga Marine National Park , a protected bay
cluttered with more than 40 peaked karst islands. Vast mangrove forests border the
bay, providing fertile fishing grounds for local villagers.
KO PHI-PHI DON TO RAILAY GO 'KO' HOPPING
South of Phuket, small islands and beaches are cradled together in a scenic coastal
neighbourhood. Travellers visit them in succession as if they were all cherished
family members.
From Phuket, boat down to (1) Ko Phi-Phi Don , the beauty queen of the Thai is-
lands with just the right proportions of mod-cons and party power.
Then boat to (2) Ko Lanta , which has exceptional dive sites and lots of 'island'
personality. Hire a motorcycle and cruise the local fishing villages and roadside food
shacks to get in touch with Lanta's local population of Muslim and Buddhist Thais
as well as chow lair (also spelt chao leh, sea gypsies). This kicked-back island
doesn't have the flawless good looks of Ko Phi-Phi, but it has a whole lot of soul.
