HUA HIN TO PHETCHABURI QUICK BEACH BREAK
If you're short on time, (1) Hua Hin is an ideal commute by road from the capital,
without the hassle of a ferry transfer. The beachfront hotels meet international
standards and the nightly food market specialises in unbeatable seafood special-
ties, enjoyed by domestic and international tourists alike. For many Thais, the night
market is the sole reason for a visit. But the mainland beach is another powerful
contender, with its powder-soft sand and a rocky headland adorned by a golden
Buddha and hilltop temple. It is an unbeatable convergence of city conveniences
and attractions with coastal distractions.
Take a break from the beach and head to (2) Phetchaburi for a bit of culture, a
nearby provincial town boasting a hilltop palace and a Gaudi-esque cave temple.
Alternatively, day trip to (3) Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park , a nature preserve
filled with limestone caves, the country's largest freshwater marsh and migrating
bird species.

The Gulf coast's premier island, (1) Ko Samui appeals to every kind of traveller and
is easily accessible from Bangkok by air. Base yourself in lovely Chaweng to be
close to the action, or retreat to the northern beaches of Mae Nam and Bo Phut,
both with laid-back appeal. Consider dabbling in the island's various health treat-
ments, from beachside yoga to three-day fasts. Rent a motorcycle and tour the
sleepy backwater villages in the southern part of the island.
Swim among the craggy and curiously shaped limestone islands of (2) Ang
Thong Marine National Park , a popular day trip from Samui.
If your timing is right, you can ferry over to (3) Ko Pha-Ngan for the monthly
beachside raves. Welcome the rising sun and hop on a ferry back to Samui for
some well-earned sleep.
Devote a few days to a snorkelling or diving tour of (4) Ko Tao , a small island
