Eating
The night market has a decent collection of food stalls offering snacks and meals,
from deep-fried wontons to fresh fish. Choose a dish and sit at the nearby tables, or
step inside one of several restaurants on and off Th Phahonyothin by the night mar-
ket.
LUNG EED LOCOL FOOD $
(Th Watpranorn; mains 30-60B; 11.45am-9pm Mon-Sat) There's an English-lan-
guage menu on the wall, but don't miss the sublime lâhp gài (minced chicken fried
with herbs and topped with crispy deep-fried shallots and garlic). The restaurant is
on Th Watpranorn near the intersection with the Superhighway.

Vietnamese-Northern Thai
( Th Sanpannard; mains 10-100B; 9am-5pm) This somewhat concealed place
serves a unique mix of Vietnamese and northern Thai dishes. Tasty food, friendly
service and a barn-like atmosphere make us wish they served them for dinner as
well.
PAA SUK $
(no roman-script sign; Th Sankhongnoi; mains 10-25B; 8am-3pm Mon-Sat) This
immensely popular third-generation restaurant specialises in the local dish ka ̀ ·no ̆ m
jeen na ́ m nge ́ e·o (a thin broth of pork or beef and tomatoes served over fresh rice
noodles). The restaurant is between Soi 4 and Soi 5 of Th Sankhongnoi (the street
is called Th Sathanpayabarn where it intersects with Th Phahonyothin); look for the
yellow sign.

Northern Thai
( 673/1 Th Thanalai; mains 80-320B; lunch & dinner; ) This air-conditioned
restaurant is exceedingly popular with Thai tourists for its tasty, but slightly gentri-
fied northern Thai fare. Recommended local dishes include the gaang hang·lair,
pork belly in a rich Burmese-style curry, here served with pickled garlic, and sâ i
o ̀ o·a, herb-packed sausages.
