Historic Kanchanaburi
The foothills northwest of Bangkok hosted a dramatic WWII subplot. The town of
Kanchanaburi ( Click here ) was the site of a brutal Japanese-run prisoner of war
(POW) labour camp that constructed a rail route through the treacherous terrain
with rudimentary supplies. Today, two lovingly maintained war cemeteries shelter
the Allied dead and several interesting museums document the wartime conquest
of the jungle.
