Khmer Ruins
Smaller versions of Angkor Wat dot the countryside of the rural northeast. Temples,
including Phimai ( Click here ) and Phanom Rung ( Click here ), linked the distant
empire's capital to its far-flung frontier outposts. In addition to ornate and ancient ar-
chitecture, the surrounding countryside is a fascinating look at rural Thailand: rice
paddies, sarong-clad grandmas and long-suffering water buffaloes submerged in
muddy ponds.
