Ayuthaya Don't Miss List
BY LAITHONGRIEN (OM) MEEPAN, FOUNDER/DIRECTOR OF AYUTHAYA ELEPHANT PALACE & ROYAL ELEPHANT
KRAAL VILLAGE
1 AYUTHAYA HISTORICAL STUDY CENTRE
This well-curated museum ( Click here ) depicts the history of Ayuthaya when it
was the capital of Siam. There are many interesting displays and models that en-
gage the imagination and inform the intellect about Ayuthaya's role in trade and
empire building. Once you piece together Ayuthaya's history, you'll understand
how Siam remained independent.
2 WAT SUWAN DARARAM
In the southeast corner of the old city, this beautiful and peaceful temple ( Click
here ) is particularly interesting because of the brilliant and historical murals. The
uposatha (ordination hall) contains murals depicting the life of the Lord Buddha,
and the wí hăhn (assembly hall) has murals depicting the life of King Naresuan
(one of Ayuthaya's most revered warrior kings) and a famous elephant battle.
3 ELEPHANT KRAAL
My elephant conservation organisation runs this historic elephant stockade (
Click here ), the only one left in Thailand. It was here that elephants were roun-
ded up and trained for war. Today, there are over 180 elephants living here. We
provide a safe haven for them and support the mahout culture. Without work, the
elephants and their mahouts often migrate to Bangkok and other urban centres
as beggars, an ignoble and unsafe fate for what was once a royal profession.
