Chao Phraya River Don't Miss List
BY PYLIN (JANE) SANGUANPIYAPAND, OWNER OF SEVEN HOTEL
1 LONG-TAIL BOAT RIDES
The long-tail boat ride through the Khlong Bangkok Noi ( Click here ) is an unfor-
gettable experience. There is a charming simplicity on these canals. Along the
way, kids play in the water, granddads check out the scene from a humble
wooden porch and monks clean the temple grounds. There are also mâa káh
(vendors) selling all kinds of things from their boats, and housewives preparing
dinner. I recommend this trip to all of my guests.
2 WAT ARUN
Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn; Click here ) sits directly on the river and is a very
majestic site. It was founded after the fall of Ayuthaya as a sign that the country
could be reborn. Though Wat Arun looks very good from the water, it is even bet-
ter looking from land. Be sure to tour the grounds to discover that the imposing
structure is covered with delicate pieces of porcelain mosaics.
3 DRINKS BY THE RIVER
Tourists can enjoy the river view from the Amorosa ( Click here ), which over-
looks some of Thailand's most famous riverside temples. It is a wonderful place
to dream of a simple life and watch the evening show of boats zipping and lum-
bering along the river. There are often cool river breezes that are just as refresh-
ing as an evening drink after a hot and humid day.
4 DINNER BESIDE THE RIVER
There are many restaurants beside the river, but my favourite is Ban Klang Nam
(Soi 14, Th Phra Ram III, Bang Kho Laem) , in the southern part of the city. It serves
the best Thai seafood in my opinion. Call the head waiter Khun Chai ( 08
1581 5848) for a good table. The restaurant is far from the centre of town, so you
should hire a taxi.
